Bad Bugs & Essential Oils That Scare Them Away 

With summer approaching, you may be spending more time outdoors enjoying the beautiful sunshine. However, sunshine is not the only thing you will be encountering more of as you venture outside; Bad Bugs that carry and spread disease such as Zika!  Below find 7 bugs you may need to repel.

You may be tempted to rush to the nearest store and buy a bottle of bug spray, but BEWARE! Most bug sprays contain harmful chemicals that may cause damage to the body, such as DEET (chemical name N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide). Some persons who used products containing a high concentration of DEET or who were exposed to excessive amounts of DEET have experienced skin rashes, blisters, and skin and mucous membrane irritation. There is, however, a safe alternative to all those bad chemicals contained in most bug sprays. Mosquitos

Mosquitos are definitely one of the most annoying bad bugs you might encounter this summer. Besides annoying, they can also be dangerous! Mosquitoes have been known to be carriers of many disease causing viruses and parasites. All the more reason to prevent a bite! Here is a list of some Essential oils that will help to repel mosquitoes. All of which can be applied to your skin directly or in a mist. (See Recipes Below)

Ticks

Going for a hike this summer? Or maybe even a stroll through the park or forest? Chances are you may brush across ticks. This is another bad bug that carries disease and should be avoided! Spiders

Ants

Ants are tiny bad bugs you can encounter outside, but also can invade your home too! They will often invade your stored food, and some may sting or bite. Here are some essential oils to repel ants.  (See Recipes Below)

Gnats

Gnats are itsy bitsy bad bugs. They usually gather in large swarms and some types of gnats will bite you. Here are some essential oils to repel gnats. (See “Spray” Recipes Below)

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are very small oval brown bugs. They are very sneaky bugs, and can hide in small places, usually in the mattress, box springs, mattress covers or carpets near where you may sleep. They are active at night, and leave terrible bites.  They love to eat dead skin but don’t stop there! Here are some essential oils to repel bed bugs. Each of these oils can be applied to your skin directly or in a mist. (See Recipes Below)

Flies

There are two types of flies.  Some bite while others don’t.  Flies are attracted to rotting food and means they are most likely carrying bacteria on them.  However, these flies are not the ones most of us hate the most.  Horseflies, not only vectors of disease, they can literally drain almost a 1/3 of a pint of blood from a person in about 6 hours.  Here are some essential oils to repel bed bugs. Each of these oils can be applied to your skin directly or in a mist. (See Recipes Below)  By the way, horseflies are attracted to dark colors so keep that in mind when heading out.

Essential Oil Bug Repellant Recipes

Neat or Diluted

Skin

Mix 2-3 drops of the chosen Essential Oil with carrier oil and apply directly to your skin.

Mix 1-2 drops of the chosen Essential Oil to your face wash and body wash.

 

Spray

Add approximately 6-8 drops of the chosen Essential Oil per ounce of water. Essential Oil will float on top so shake well to mix before misting. Avoid eyes. Test before spraying on fabrics.

 

Add approximately 15 drops of the chosen Essential Oil per ounce of vodka, gin or Everclear.  Essential Oil will dissolve in alcohol. Mist on the couch, carpet and furniture. Do not spray near eyes or open flame.

 

Add approximately 5-6 drops of the chosen Essential Oil to your dryer sheet with your clothes.  Do not spray near eyes or open flame.

 

Soak

Add approximately 15 drops of the chosen Essential Oil per ounce of vodka, gin or Everclear.  Essential Oil will dissolve in alcohol. Soak cloth with mix in a ziplock bag and place in the area of concern. Do not spray near eyes or open flame.

 

Sprinkle 4-5 drops of these oils along the floor boards, carpet or small tucked rugs where bugs like to nest.

 

 Diffuse

Mix 15-20 drops of the chosen Essential Oil with 1/3 cup of water and 2-3 teaspoons of Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol. Add to a glass or ceramic jar, with diffuser reeds or bamboo skewers.
