ToxicFree® Living Week

ToxicFree® Living Week

ToxicFree Living Week Day 1

DAY 1 – Ventilate

Open a window! No seriously, go open a window to help ventilate your home. Did you know that the air quality INSIDE your some can be up to 100 times more polluted than the air outside? The air is filled with toxins that off gas from our flooring, paint, furniture, and cleaning products. These chemicals get trapped in the walls, air systems, and every porous surface of your home! Opening the windows is an easy and inexpensive way to start your ToxicFree® journey.

Some other suggestions for detoxing the air in your home:

  1.      Attic, Stove Exhaust and Bathrooms Fans: If you have an attic with a fan, turn it on while the windows are open to circulate in fresh air. Use the stove exhaust and bathroom fans on a regular basis to help circulate the air inside your home.

  2.      Change the filters: Change the filters for your vacuum, air conditioning, and heating system regularly and if possible, choose HEPA filters.

  3.      Clean top to bottom: Vacuum, dust and mop on a regular basis starting at the top of a room and working your way down.

  4.      Adopt a “No Shoe” Policy: Remove shoes at the door to prevent tracking in dirt and pollutants from outside, or get a heavy-duty mat to wipe your shoes before coming inside.

  5.      Purchase an air purifying system: After all that hard work, an air purifying system will help maintain a healthier indoor air quality.

ToxicFree Living Week Day 2

DAY 2 – Buy an Indoor Plant

The bedroom is a great place for a plant! Did you know we spend up to 1/3 or more of our lives in the bedroom? Other rooms to consider putting a plant in are the kitchen, living room, home office, or children’s playroom. Here are some of the top indoor plants recommended to help improve the air quality inside your home.

  1.      Bamboo Palm

  2.      Peace Lily

  3.      Snake Plant

  4.      Spider Plant

These plants are easy to care for and need watering only once a week which means even those without a green thumb can keep them alive! As a precaution, if you have pets avoid getting a peace lily or a snake plant as these are toxic if ingested by an animal.

ToxicFree Living Week Day 3

DAY 3 – Read the Labels

Today is the day we look at the labels on your personal care and household care products. Do you or someone you know have an autoimmune disorder? Have/had cancer? Learning difficulties? The toxic chemicals in the products sold everyday as safe and effective are impacting our health negatively. Of the 80,000+ chemicals used to manufacture products in the US, thousands of those are BANNED in other countries! Many of the products you use that are “natural” and “green” are filled with toxic chemicals. House cleaning products with fragrances contain phthalates, a group of chemicals commonly used to improve softness and texture. They’re found in everything from vinyl and cosmetics to food and perfumes. Phthalates are referred to as endocrine disruptors, which means that they disrupt the body’s process of producing hormones. Even when you use gloves, the chemicals in these cleaners enter our blood stream through inhalation. Your body is unable to disperse toxic build up in your body effectively and regular use of toxic cleaners can cause harmful, more serious effects later in life. Do you have children, pets or those with weakened immune systems in your life? Consider your own health. Really take a look at the products you or your family may be using and consider switching to ToxicFree® products. Ready to ditch the chemical filled cleaners and personal care products? Get out a trash can and toss all of those toxin filled products! Over the next several days we will discuss what ToxicFree® swaps you can make!

ToxicFree Living Week Day 4

DAY 4 – Switch to ToxicFree®

When going ToxicFree® one of the best places to start is with our personal care products. Deodorant, moisturizers and lotions, face serums, and sunscreens stay on our skin the longest which means those chemicals are passing into your system all day, and it only takes 26 seconds from first contact. Switch to ToxicFree® versions as soon as possible! If you have children or grandchildren consider swapping to a fluoride free toothpaste such as Chaé Organics O2XY™ Brite Tooth Polish as well as the Baby Shampoo n’ Wash for ToxicFree® bath time! Small bodies and those with weakened immune systems are much more susceptible to the toxic overload of harmful chemicals in products and their environment. Next look at your shampoos and other wash off products. Go Beyond Natural offers both skin care and body care products that are safe for the whole family. Still not ready? Start small! Can’t let go? Swap one thing at a time! Think it’s too pricey? Instead of saying “that’s too expensive”, try saying “my health isn’t worth the investment.” How does that feel?

ToxicFree Living Week Day 5

Need one product that can do it all? Switch to Chaé Organics Cleanz Everything! This all-purpose cleanser really does clean everything! ToxicFree Living Week Day 6

DAY 6 – Remove Synthetic Fragrances

Perfumes and fragrances contain chemicals that can cause a wide range of adverse health effects. We use many types of products to make ourselves and our homes smell “good.” These include air fresheners, aerosol sprays, perfumes, plug-ins, potpourri, dryer sheets, and scented candles. Even those that claim to be “unscented” or “natural” can be filled with toxic chemicals. Replace these with a diffuser and your favorite essential oils or use actual cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and orange peels to make your own potpourri. Day 7 we will cover how to make your laundry routine healthier by swapping dryer sheets for a healthier ToxicFree® option!

ToxicFree Living Week Day 7

DAY 7 – Laundry Detox

Even laundry detergents marketed to be the safest and most gentle for newborn babies have been found to be filled with toxic chemicals! Dryer sheets are also culprits in lowering our air quality and adding to our toxic load. Throw away and discontinue the use of any fabric softener, dryer sheets, or other laundry products that are not ToxicFree®. Chaé Organics Sudz Laundry Concentrate is an effective and HE approved laundry soap that leaves your clothes clean without breaking down the fabric or coating it with synthetic fragrances and softeners. Consider purchasing wool dryer balls to replace dryer sheets. You can add scent to them with a few drops of your favorite essential oil if you would like. Check out our blog post The Problem with Dryer Sheets for our complete laundry routine detox and all the ToxicFree® products and solutions we love!

This wraps up our ToxicFree® Living Week! We’ve made it through the major areas of the home, making ToxicFree® swaps to improve the health of you and your home. We hope you take these tips and lessons and continue removing toxic products from your home and replacing them with ToxicFree® alternatives!
