Tips to help you wake up feeling well rested and ready for the day!

When we sleep better, we feel better and in turn wake up easier and with more energy! Here are some tips on how to become a morning person!

The night before –

Eliminate electronics from the bedroom - For a better night’s sleep and a better morning turn off all electronics 45-60 minutes before bed. Clearing those distractions and eliminating blue light have been shown to be beneficial to falling asleep faster and for longer.

Create a bedtime routine – Establish a schedule and practice it. Diffuse a relaxing essential oil, drink a cup of decaffeinated tea or read a book to wind down.

Go to bed earlier – Try going to bed 15 minutes earlier than normal. When starting a new routine, you may need extra time to adjust.  

Nap cautiously – If you need to take a nap, take it during the day well before you start your nighttime routine. A 15-30-minute nap can sometimes do wonders, just don’t let it impact your night!

Moderate your food and drink – Don’t go to bed too full or too hungry and on the same note don’t drink too much water before bed or have caffeine or alcohol. Both have been shown to disrupt sleep.

Get cozy – Temperature, noise, light and comfort all play into how well you sleep. A cool, quiet room around 65 degrees Fahrenheit is the best environment to promote a good night’s sleep.

In the morning –

Don’t hit snooze – Even if you do, force yourself to get up. By the time your alarm goes off you will be awake. Do the following things to get your morning going!

Open the curtains and let in natural light – Natural light helps to jump start your mind and body! Your circadian rhythm is set by light and dark. Exposure to light helps keep your schedule, so in the winter use a light therapy lamp to help mimic natural light!

Move – Stretch, walk around, do whatever you need to wake up!

Drink water – To refresh and replenish, drink water every morning before eating or having tea or coffee.

Meditate – Open the window for fresh air if you can, find a comfortable, peaceful spot and take 5 minutes to do breathing exercises or simple yoga poses that help you stretch.

Make a to do list – Once your mind is clear, take a few minutes to write down what you want to accomplish.

Eat a healthy breakfast – Skip overly sugary options and go for fresh fruit, whole grain carbs, and protein to fuel your day. If you have to stick to a stricter diet be sure to follow it! Eating healthy for your body is the best option!
